(1) Many fat people have an amazing amount of will power when it comes to food. We've been on every diet there is, and I, myself, fasted for 28 days (yes, 28) with nothing but water. It was for a reason other than weight loss, but weight loss was something that occurred. So was gaining the weight back, along with more.

(2) Some of us have amazing statistics, if one is believe that being fat causes all sorts of other problems. Mine? Age: 47. Height: 5'6". Weight: 229. Blood Pressure: 130/79. Cholesterol (to quote my doctor): "A 12-year-old would kill for your cholesterol level."

(3) Many diseases "run" in a family's gene pool, and no one knows exactly why someone in that family doesn't suffer from the same maladies. My family (both sides) has a history of heart, circulatory & arthritic diseases which have hit thin and fat family without prejudice as to size. I suffer from none of them, and examinations and tests show that as of now, I have no proclivity toward them.

(4) Many people who are fat don't have the kind of success with diets that "normal" people find workable. Case in point: I was on a 500 calorie a day diet once, and GAINED three pounds in five days.

(5) You CAN be "fit and fat." I do believe our medal-winning U.S. woman weightlifter proves that one with no other argument necessary... however, for myself, I can go to Disneyland at 8am and leave at 1am the following morning, and outwalk and outlast supposedly "fit" people any day of the week. I was with a 17-year-old and 27-year-old at the Park once (both of whom were quite "fit" according to government standards), and they both pooped out on me by 9pm!!!

(6) There are some people who are fat and who have mobility problems and other medical ailments that can sometimes be accurately linked to their obesity. Do you think that in those cases people haven't tried or continue to do so? There have been many postings here about different problems people have been having, the changes they've made in their food programs and the successes or difficulties they have encountered.

(7) This site is about SIZE ACCEPTANCE... not hiding one's head in the sand. Those who are comfortable and happy with where they're at are accepted without prejudice and judgment. Those who need encouragement in making lifestyle changes are encouraged. Those who need moral support are given it.

(8) EACH PERSON IS DIFFERENT. What works for one, doesn't necessarily work for another, and there's always the chance that someone might not only be OKAY with their size, but have a life partner who LIKES it, and be amazingly healthy as well.

(9) To attribute all sorts of diseases to being fat is ludicrous, any more than saying that because I have red hair I'm more likely to die by stoning for temper-related incidents. [hehe] I may sunburn more easily, but it doesn't threaten my life or enjoyment of it.

(10) The "cures" are often more dangerous than the "problem" itself. My aunt DIED as a result of the intestinal bypass surgery over 30 years ago... and you know something? The statistics aren't ANY better today than they were then: Over FIFTY PERCENT (yes, 50%) of the people who have that surgery are dead, incapacitated for life, gravely ill or suffering from a significant decrease in their quality of life within ONE YEAR of the surgery. Carny Wilson has the money to go to the "best" clinics and receive all the proper after-care. It may mean that she will be one of the fortunate ones. It may not... she has a 50/50 chance. I'll take the odds on staying fat before those!

Please recognize that the people here are intelligent enough to know that there are limits to one's size before it becomes detrimental to one's well-being and lifestyle. That size differs for each person, and this site is dedicated to providing a safe haven for us to discuss these (and other) issues without feeling we have to apologize for our bodies.

And you know something else? My husband thinks I'm the sexiest woman alive, every pound of me, and we have a VERY active life. We walk, we travel, we do all the things "normal" people do, and aren't hampered in the least because we're fat.
